AquaBraves Battle State Powerhouse 7 Hills

Semester final exams are synonymous with sleep deprivation and high anxiety for high school students, and they have only one positive aspect...the end of the 1st half of the school year and the subsequent 2 week winter vacation. For the Indian Hill HS Swim and Dive teams, vacation was delayed for a few hours as they made the short drive on Friday afternoon to Mariemont High School for the final meet of December. This time they were facing the Ohio State D2 Swimming juggernaut Seven Hills Stingers. Over the past 3 years, the 7 Hills boys have won 2 State Team Championships and had a Runner-Up finish, and the girls have had multiple individual State Champions.

The Braves knew that they had their work cut out for them, but they came to the pool ready to battle and never backed down.

The boys were up for the challenge, and the combined S&D Braves fought to a virtual tie with the Stingers, 90-90. While the 7 Hills swimmers edged out the Braves 90-80, the Braves divers went 10-0 to even the overall score. Senior Noah Vigran put on an absolute show on the springboard, and he had the crowd oohing and aahing even in warmups. Noah put up 353.25 points to grab his usual 1st place, with Ethan Morris taking 2nd for the Braves.

In the pool, while sophomores Devin Edwards and Will Taylor were the Braves' only 1st place finishers, the AquaBraves came at the Stingers in waves, and just like last year, piled up points with a multitude of 2nd and 3rd place finishers.

The Braves with Top 3 finishes in each event were:

  • 200 Free Will Taylor 2nd 1:50.06, Nick Bulas 3rd 1:52.29
  • 200 IM Sam Okum 3rd 2:12.81
  • 50 Free Owen Norwell 2nd 24.15
  • 100 Fly Joe Dowling 3rd 1:00.41
  • 100 Free Devin Edwards 1st 51.44, Gabe Yin 2nd 53.48
  • 500 Free Will Taylor 1st 5:04.61, Max Eihausen 2nd 5:08.93
  • 100 Back Nick Bulas 2nd 58.22, Joe Dowling 3rd 1:01.07
  • 100 Breast Gabe Yin 2nd 1:08.08

The Braves' top relays were:

  • 200 Medley Relay: 2nd (Joe Dowling, Sam Okum, Gabe Yin, Max Eihausen) 1:45.84

  • 400 Free Relay: 2nd (Sam Okum, Joe Dowling, Nick Bulas, Max Eihausen) 3:34.34

The LadyBraves swam hard and were barely edged out by Seven Hills, 86-82. Sophomores Jillian Rice and Liv Riggs were the Braves' 1st place finishers, and there was a host of Braves who grabbed 2nd and 3rd place podium spots. The 200 Free Relay team also grabbed a 1st place.

The LadyBraves with Top 3 finishes in each event were:

  • 200 Free Caroline Sullivan 2nd 2:23.07, Jessie Cleverly 3rd 2:27.29
  • 200 IM Liv Riggs 2nd 2:28.91, Kate Lewis 3rd 2:45.35

  • 100 Back Brianna Yin 2nd 1:08.14, Jasmin Lau 3rd 1:14.02
  • 100 Breast Liv Riggs 1st 1:15.30

  • 400 Free Relay: 2nd (Jasmin Lau, Liv Riggs, Jillian rice, Brianna Yin) 4:03.51

Noah Vigran dominates springboardA special nod goes out to Team Captains Joe Dowling, Kate Lewis, Sam Okum, and Brianna Yin, who had their swimmers in great team spirit from start to finish.

In summary, the AquaBraves closed out 2017 in style, battling the Seven Hills Stingers to the wire, showing that they can hang head to head with a State Championship caliber team.

The real question to answer during the break is "How good can they be come Championship Season in February?". If the Swim & Dive Braves put in 5 weeks of focused practice, build their endurance, and improve their starts and walls, this observer sees a lot of success in February. We will see.

Next up after Break is a great challenge at the Saturday, January 6th Moeller Invitational, to be held in the Powell-Crosley YMCA Bubble at 2:00pm. This is always a great meet, traditionally attracting a mix of D1 and D2 teams, like conference rivals Wyoming and Madeira, and D1 teams including host Moeller. If you are back ready to cheer on your Braves at the end of Break, come out to Powell Crosley Y to cheer on your Braves!
